Monitor Specifications

The first thing to consider with monitors is the technology of the monitor. Currently the choices are between CRT (cathode ray tube) or LCD (liquid crystal display). The next thing to consider is the cable technology. Again there are two; VGA (video graphics array) or DVI (digital visual interface). DVI is the newer technology. The viewable area of a monitor is another important specification. Monitors are measured in inches, diagonally from corner to corner. The viewable area is usually 1 inch less than the manufacturer’s size specifications. For example with a 17” monitor the viewable area is usually 16”. The last thing to keep in mind with monitors is the resolution that they are capable of producing.
